DJ Diesel: The Unsung Hero of Dubstep

Dubstep. The dirty, wobble, wobble bullshit that's the unfortunate stigma that comes with electronic dance music. You know what I'm talking about if you're the one person in your group that listens to EDM and your friends immediately think about the ~wubs~.

This hard, filthy, wobble, wobble stigma is showcased by a man no one would expect. He has every reason NOT to DJ dubstep music, but for some reason he seems to love it. I have nothing but enormous respect for him. He has shown the world this community and shined a light on a culture that millions had no idea about.

So who is DJ DIESEL? Well, to put it simply, he is the 4x NBA Champion, 3x NBA Finals MVP and 15x NBA All-Star just to name a few of his accomplishments. I’m talking about Shaq, Shaquille fucking O’Neal.

I wish I could tell you why he decided to get into this space. Considering just how strange of a niche it is to the normal eye, but he’s making it happen!

Standing at 7 ft 1 in (according to his Wikipedia page, probably made by some dweeb on the Internet. Sorry Shaq if I’m wrong), DJ DIESEL lingers over the crowd coming to see him at some of the top music festivals in the world. Most recently, he performed at Lollapalooza here in Chicago. He has also performed at the largest dubstep music festival in the country, in Ohio, Lost Lands. Not to mention the LARGEST music festival in the world, Tomorrowland… Insert sentence about him performing at the largest “food chain” of EDM music festivals, Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas.

DJ DIESEL appears committed to the game, and growing dubstep as a whole. He’s undergone speculation of him actually being a music producer, and instead just being a DJ that plays the songs of other artists. You may not realize he’s produced songs with some of the most prestigious artists in the country, in addition to his solo hits. See BANG with NGHTMRE and Lil Jon. But, I’m not going to go through all of his collabs in an effort to convince some other dweeb that he’s a producer.. I’ll just tell you about his announcement.

Last week, DJ DIESEL took to social media to announce his debut album, GORILLA WARFARE.

He said “GORILLA WARFARE • AUGUST 18 its here…. DIESEL’s debut album… 10 all new songs with some of my favorite artists on @monstercat . dubstep for me is an escape. it’s a genre of music that allows me to feel free. this one is for the people… its for the community we all love so much.”

What do I get out of that? He really cares about the people. He cares about developing this music scene, in addition to the fans involved.

Now, let’s not forget, we’re talking about Shaquille O’Neal. This dude is making millions of dollars off of advertisements, reportedly $10 million a year before tax from his deal with TNT, not to mention all of the money he made from his career in the NBA.

I mean, if I were in his shoes, as much as I would love to be on tour as a DJ, my ass would retire on a beach with a Corona in my hand. DJ DIESEL has more on his mind than throwing in the towel. The dude just wants to live his life and achieve everything he ever dreamed of. I would love to be able to talk with this man about his career in music.

So, Mr. DIESEL if you're reading this... Next time you're in Chicago, let's set up a time to talk about how all of this shit came to be and give the people what they want.

For now, DJ DIESEL’s debut album GORILLA WARFARE is out at midnight. Can't wait.
